A new chapter on Oak Street

In 2024 a new team took over the stone house at 11 Oak Street and renamed it Woodland Park Lakes Holidays. The rooms kept their Lake District names, and the sign in the bay window says the plan plainly: book direct.

No independent website; the old domain now shows unrelated content. So this page is the next best thing: the photos are real, the number below rings the house team, and there is no middleman in between.

  • New management since 2024, hosted by Brittany
  • As seen on TV: Channel 4's Four in a Bed, Series 28
  • House motif: Peter Rabbit plushes in the rooms, a nod to Beatrix Potter's Lake District

Windermere and Bowness: a local guide

11 Oak Street sits in Windermere village, a few minutes' walk from the station and about a mile uphill from the lake at Bowness. Everything below is within easy reach on foot, by bus or by boat.

Must-see, free

  • Bowness Bay and the lakeshore walk. Free The promenade, the jetties and the long shore path south. Best in the early morning or at golden hour; about a 15 to 20 minute walk downhill from the house.
  • Orrest Head viewpoint. Free Wainwright's first Lakeland fell: a 20 minute climb from near Windermere station for the classic view down the lake. Go on a clear morning.
  • Stock Ghyll Force, Ambleside. Free A woodland waterfall walk of about 30 minutes from Ambleside centre. Lovely after rain. Ambleside is about 15 to 20 minutes by bus or car from the house.
  • Tarn Hows. Free A gentle circular walk around a famous tarn, about 20 minutes' drive toward Coniston. Allow 1 to 2 hours.

Must-see, paid

  • Windermere Lake Cruises. 45-minute to full-lake sailings from Bowness Pier, with stops at Ambleside Waterhead and Lakeside. Book ahead in school holidays; morning sailings are quietest. Bowness Pier is about a 15 to 20 minute walk downhill from the house.
  • Brockhole on Windermere. The Lake District visitor centre, about 2 miles south of Bowness, with gardens, lake access and family activities. About a 10-minute drive from the house.
  • Hill Top, near Sawrey. Beatrix Potter's farmhouse (National Trust). Timed entry, so book in advance. About 15 minutes' drive from the house.
  • Dove Cottage, Grasmere. Wordsworth's former home, about 5 miles away, with guided tours. About 15 minutes' drive from the house.

Eating and drinking

  • Book ahead. Restaurants in Bowness and Windermere fill fast on weekends and in holidays; a quick call saves a wasted walk.
  • Lakeside pubs and village cafes. Bowness has the lake-view spots, Windermere village the daytime cafes and bakeries. Kitchens often close by 8 or 9 pm.
  • The pitfall: peak-season menu premiums on the Bowness promenade. A short walk into Windermere village usually buys better value for the same quality.

Traps to avoid

  • Parking fills early. We have no onsite parking; use the public car park on Broad Street, a 1-minute walk. Windermere and Bowness car parks are often full by midday on sunny weekends.
  • The A591 on summer weekends. The road to Ambleside and Keswick can crawl; allow extra time or take the 555/599 bus and let someone else drive.
  • Fell weather. Conditions change fast above the valley. Carry a layer, check the forecast before heading up, and do not rely on phone signal on the fells.
  • Cold water. Windermere is cold all year. Only swim where it is safe and supervised.

Safety notes

  • Walking: stick to marked paths, tell someone your route, and carry water. Ticks live in summer bracken; check yourself after walks.
  • Driving: single-track lanes with passing places are normal here. Reverse into the nearest passing place on your side.
  • Evenings: village streets are quiet and well lit, but the walk back up from Bowness is steep in places; allow time after dark.

Getting here

  • Train: Windermere station is a few minutes' walk away, at the end of the Lakes Line from Oxenholme, which connects to the West Coast Main Line.
  • Bus: the 555 and 599 link Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick; the open-top 599 runs in season.
  • Car: M6 junction 36, then the A591. Manchester Airport is about 2 hours by road.
  • Boat: lake cruises from Bowness Pier connect to Ambleside and to Lakeside, where the steam railway runs to Haverthwaite.
